Group Therapy

We offer a variety of CBT-based groups to address specific problems that are particularly amenable to treatment in group settings. If you are interested in participating in any of the groups described below, please complete the form below the group description or contact us at (212) 546-9200. These groups are offered as stand-alone treatments. Individual therapy with a CBT/DBT Associates therapist is not required.

Groups for Adults

CBT for Social Anxiety: Navigating the Social Waters with Confidence

Wednesdays 6:00-7:30 PM | Led by Kristen Roman, Psy.D.

Group duration: 8 weeks

This new Social Anxiety Group incorporates mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness skills from DBT. With feedback from a supportive group, members will practice assertiveness, conversational skills, and being in the moment when interacting with others. Treatment goals include: enhancing confidence in social settings; learning how to initiate conversations; and learning how to express positive and negative emotions to others. This CBT Social Anxiety Group is appropriate for adults 18+.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy: Preventing Depression with Mindful Meditation

Mondays 5:30-7:30 PM | Led by Rachel Hutt, Ph.D.

Group duration: 8 weeks

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an evidence-based treatment designed to prevent the recurrence of depression through the practice of mindfulness techniques and group discussion. Over the course of 8 weeks, participants will learn how to change their relationship to challenging thoughts and experiences and participate more fully in the present moment.

Groups for Children and Adolescents

Family Changes: Support Group for Children Coping with Separation and Divorce

Thursdays 4:30PM – 5:30PM | Led by Ilana Luft, Ph.D.

Family Changes is designed for children (ages 6-9) who have experienced or are experiencing a parental separation or divorce. Led by our Director ofChild, Adolescent, and Family Services, Ilana Luft, Ph.D., this group will help children understand their emotional experience and the changing family structure during this time. Additionally, this group gives participants the opportunity to learn effective communication, problem-solving, and coping skills in a supportive environment and with peers who have shared experiences.

Workshop Series: Parenting a Child with Anxiety

Tuesdays 11:00 AM – 12:15 PM | Led by Alison Bellevue, Psy.D.

Group duration: 8 weeks

A new offering with our Middle School Program, this workshop is for caregivers of children (ages 8-14) who are experiencing increased anxiety or have a previously diagnosed anxiety disorder. Parents will gain a better understanding of their child’s anxiety and how best to respond to their child’s emotions and behaviors in the moment.

CBT Social Skills Group: Adolescent Social Anxiety

Tuesdays 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM | Led by Alison Bellevue, Psy.D.

Group duration: 8 weeks

This new CBT-based group is designed to help teenagers navigate new and more complex social environments. Participants will learn skills to better manage anxiety, make new friends, and feel more comfortable talking to peers and engaging in activities of interest. Participants will have the opportunity to practice learned skills in the moment within a small and supportive community.
