Group Therapy

We offer a variety of CBT-based groups to address specific problems that are particularly amenable to treatment in group settings. If you are interested in participating in any of the groups described below, please complete the form below the group description or contact us at (212) 546-9200. These groups are offered as stand-alone treatments. Individual therapy with a CBT/DBT Associates therapist is not required.

Groups for Adults

CBT for Insomnia (CBT-I) Group

Tuesday, 10:00-11:00AM | Rolling Admission | Led by Tory Tomassetti, Ph.D.

Group duration: 4 weeks; new sessions are offered on a rotating basis monthly.

Our CBT-I Group is a 4-week program, offered either as a stand alone, short-term treatment or in conjunction with ongoing individual sessions. All participants will complete an individual intake session (75 minutes), which will include instruction in the first CBT-I tool, calm breathing. Participants will then complete four group sessions, during which they will learn how thoughts, lifestyle, and environmental factors affect sleep as well as a set of CBT-skills for combating insomnia .  An optional fifth session will be offered for individuals who experience chronic, repetitive nightmares.

CBT for Social Anxiety: Navigating the Social Waters with Confidence

Tuesday, 7:00-8:30PM | Beginning November 27 | Led by Kristen Roman, Psy.D.

Group duration: 8 weeks, rolling admission

This new Social Anxiety Group incorporates mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness skills from DBT. With feedback from a supportive group, members will practice assertiveness, conversational skills, and being in the moment when interacting with others. Treatment goals include: enhancing confidence in social settings; learning how to initiate conversations; and learning how to express positive and negative emotions to others. This CBT Social Anxiety Group is appropriate for adults 18+.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Group

Thursday, 6:00-7:00PM | Beginning November 8 | Led by Jacob Firestone, Psy.D.

Group duration: 10 weeks

ACT uses acceptance- and mindfulness-based strategies to help adults live more fully with all life experiences in the present moment. Participants in our ACT group will learn these techniques to help them cope with a wide range of difficulties.

Groups for Children and Adolescents

Organizational Skills Training* for Middle School Students

Monday, 6:00-7:30PM | Beginning October 15 | Led by William Benson, Psy.D.

Group duration: 10 weeks

This new group is designed for students ages 11 – 14 who struggle with remembering homework, organizing materials, managing their time, and planning multi-step assignments. Students will learn effective routines to improve their organizational, time management, and planning (OTMP) skills and increase their academic success. Parents will also participate in a portion of each session, working together with their student to establish behavioral contracts to promote regular practice so that these new routines become habits.

*Organizational Skills Training (OST) is an evidence-based intervention shown to be effective at significantly improving organizational skills in students with ADHD.

Navigating High School: a CBT-Informed Discussion Group

Monday, 7-8PM | Beginning October 22 | Led by Alison Bellevue, Psy.D.

Group duration: 8 weeks

High School is an exciting time, spent forming lifelong friendships and discovering who you are. It also presents unique challenges that may be difficult to overcome. Achieving High School Success is a new, CBT-informed, participant driven group designed to help tackle these formative years.

CBT Social Skills Group: Adolescent Social Anxiety

Wednesday, 5:30-6:45PM| Beginning October 17 | Led by William Benson, Psy.D.

Group duration: 8 weeks

This new CBT-based group is designed to help teenagers navigate new and more complex social environments. Participants will learn skills to better manage anxiety and make new friends, as well as strategies to help them feel more comfortable talking to peers and engaging in activities of interest. Group members will have the opportunity to practice learned skills in the moment within a small and supportive community.
