Kristen Roman, Psy.D. | Director of the Young Adult Program

Kristen Roman earned her Psy.D in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology. Prior to attending Rutgers, Dr. Roman graduated from Emory University with a B.A. in Psychology. She completed her pre-doctoral clinical internship at UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services and her postdoctoral fellowship at CBT/DBT Associates.

Since the beginning of her training as a psychologist, Dr. Roman has valued evidence-based approaches to therapy and has sought out experiences to develop expertise in these approaches. During graduate school, Dr. Roman trained and was involved in research at the Rutgers University Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Clinic under the mentorship of Dr. Shireen Rizvi. It was there that she began learning DBT, working with adults with Borderline Personality Disorder and college students with emotion regulation difficulties. Dr. Roman completed graduate school externships at the Institute for Behavior Therapy in New York and the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety. At the University of Pennsylvania, she received specialized training in exposure therapy for trauma and anxiety disorders, including Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD and Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD. During her graduate training, Dr. Roman developed additional expertise in CBT for binge eating disorder and bulimia, and continues to work with these populations today.

During her internship year at UCLA, Dr. Roman continued to deliver individual and group-based CBT to a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students. She also became involved in prevention efforts on campus, and gave presentations on bystander intervention to reduce the risk of suicide and sexual assault. While working at the UCLA counseling center, Dr. Roman also became more acutely aware of her passion for working with young adult clients. She knew that she wanted to continue working with this age group when embarking on her postdoc year at CBT/DBT Associates. She now enjoys running the young adult program at the practice, including leading the young adult DBT skills group.

Dr. Roman continues to look for opportunities to contribute to the DBT community beyond her work as a therapist, and she recently co-authored a book chapter in the Oxford Handbook of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy on strategies for skills generalization in DBT. Dr. Roman is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT).
